Photo of the Week 11 by Simon Cardwell

This week I would like to share with you a photograph taken at the Hall Garth Hotel in Darlington.

Unusually for a wedding taking place in the north east of England it featured a red London bus, an original routemaster.

For years I wanted to photograph a London Bus at a wedding, & they always eluded me. In the last year I have shot 2 of them, so true to life, no buses then two come along at the same time:

A recent wedding from the Bridge Hotel in Wetherby (near Leeds) by Simon Cardwell

For the second time in a matter of months I found myself at the Bridge Hotel in Wetherby. I shot a fun wedding there on New Year’s Eve & while the weather wasn’t great either time, its a good spot to shoot a wedding.

As usual I started with the bridal preparations:

From there it was onto the ceremony. I say this a lot, but I always hope the ceremony is taking place in a room with high ceilings & lots of natural light coming in. The Bridge has both:

It was very cold outside so we didn’t shoot many bride & groom portraits on this occasion. The couple preferred to stay indoors & mingle with their guests. In that situation I go with the flow & concentrate more on the natural reportage photographs rather than poses.

The couple’s son was a big part of the wedding day:

I said the same when I posted this photo to my Instagram on the wedding day & I will reiterate it here: it isn’t every day you see a couple wearing pants masks anywhere, let alone a wedding.

An unlikely photo such as this can provide a quirky image:

The Swinton Estate in North Yorkshire by Simon Cardwell

This week I am dipping into my archive to show you a wedding from back in 2014. While I like to share my most recent work with you I like to look back occasionally & show you something from my 12 year career.

In that time I have seen it all from the large to the small, from the lavish to the personal. Ultimately the people that are there on the day is what matters & endures, not how expensive the chair covers were.

With that in mind, I consider the photography to be the most important element of the wedding day, interns of it being the lasting document of the day. The food, clothes, drinks & most of the other stuff is gone once the day is over. But the photographs are your keepsake to show future generations.

With that in mind lets start with the bridal preparations:

Swinton Park Estate North Yorkshire
Swinton Park Estate North Yorkshire

Its a beautiful room at Swinton Park, with lots of natural light. Something I am always on the lookout for:

Walthamstow Wedding Photographer

I usually encourage passers by to walk through my picture & I keep shooting while they do. Sometimes it comes to nothing, but occasionally it creates a unique image.

On this occasion the elements all combined beautifully to create a memorable photograph:

Unusually the cake was made of cheese & the cutting took place much earlier in the day. Usually this part of the day takes place in the evening, but on this occasion it was in the late afternoon.

I often suggest to people to not feel bound by convention when planning their wedding. If you don’t want to do a first dance, don’t do one. If you’d rather not throw confetti, don’t throw it. Don’t feel like you have to do something simply because you have seen it at other weddings you have attended. Often the personal touches go a long way & make a wedding unique, not the conventions.

I really like this room at the Swinton Estate, for the beautiful natural light & how guests can gather around the table & on a staircase, creating a different feel to this stage of the day.

Photo of the Week 10 by Simon Cardwell

As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, this week’s photo of the week is of particular interest to me.

2 Star Wars themed art prints, which were mounted & displayed on easels inside the marquee where the wedding took place at Middleton Lodge in North Yorkshire.

One features Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) & says “I love you” the other of course is Han Solo (Harrison Ford) responding “I know”. It is a nice callback to the unforgettable scene in The Empire Strikes Back:

Are you having a Star Wars themed wedding? If you are I would love to photograph it for you.

A recent wedding at Walworth Castle Hotel, Darlington, County Durham by Simon Cardwell

This week I would like to share with you a wedding from a few weeks ago at a venue I work at quite regularly. Walworth Castle is only a few miles outside of my hometown of Darlington & is somewhere I have been going since I was a child.

This is the room where the ceremony takes place, when I was younger I think this room was a bar:

Walworth Castle Hotel Darlington

When a picture like this presents itself you have to be quick to grab it:

I didn’t photograph the full getting ready on this occasion so we are onto the ceremony quicker than usual:

This completely unexpected photo turned out to be my favourite of 2019 so far & one I plan to enter into the Wedding Photojournalist Association monthly photo contests:

It was an extremely windy day so the bride & groom portraits mostly took place indoors. Luckily there are enough places at Walworth Castle to do a full shoot:

I thought long & hard about photoshopping out that Fire Exit sign. Ultimately I decided to leave it as it was, because that was how it looked on the day:

A Winter Wedding at Bowburn Hall in County Durham by Simon Cardwell

I usually work at least a few weddings around Christmas time & this year was no exception. This wedding fell the day after boxing day at Bowburn Hall Hotel in County Durham.

The venue is only about a 20 minute drive from my parents house where I had spent Christmas so it worked out nicely.

An element of my job I really enjoy is how I get to meet such a diverse mix of people, in this instance the brides had been together for many years but had decided to have a wedding & make it official.

On this occasion their dog Betsy was a bridesmaid & made for an interesting subject:

This elegant moment proved to be one of my favourites from the day:

Wedding Photography at the Principal Hotel in York by Simon Cardwell

York is somewhere I love to photograph. I seem to end up here quite often & it is a fantastic & diverse city.

I came here often as a child so it holds some nostalgic value for me, but it is a city that remains very relevant today.

The Principal Hotel is located literally next to the train station so its very easy to get to (York is a terrible place to park your car) by rail.

As usual I started off during the bridal preparations, & I like to photograph children as they are often much less guarded than adults:

Photo of the Week 8 by Simon Cardwell

This week’s photo comes from the pier at Saltburn. The seaside is something I like to capture in my work where possible. On this occasion the wedding was taking place at the Spa Hotel in Saltburn so it provided us with the perfect opportunity to explore the sea front.

a wedding at Hackney Town Hall in East London by Simon Cardwell

Today I would like to share with you a photograph from my archive, the reason for me choosing this wedding is because one of the bridesmaids has recently booked me to shoot her wedding this summer at the University of Nottingham.

It is a great tribute when guests, friends or anyone who has attended a wedding I have shot then books me to photograph their wedding. Especially one from a few years ago (this wedding took place back in 2013).

The day started at Threadneedles hotel near Bank Station in the city of London:

As I have mentioned before, I love a ‘bride in a lift’ photo when such a photo presents itself:

The ceremony took place at Hackney Town Hall in East London:

The reception venue was close to Liverpool Street Station, & I persuaded the bride & groom to walk down to the back of the station for a quick picture:

I never tire seeing passers by react to a bride and groom passing them in the street. If the wedding is taking place in Central London or any other city centre I always suggest we venture out onto the streets.

In this case tourists with luggage makes a great juxtaposition with the bride and groom:

Wedding Photography at Rushpool Hall near Saltburn by Simon Cardwell

Today we are going to take an in depth look at a wedding which took place at Rushpool Hall near Saltburn.

It is a venue I have worked at many times over the years & one I know very well having shot the interiors photographs for the venue website in the past too.

I usually start a couple of hours before showtime, and I tend to follow the bride & those in close proximity of her around this time:

I usually head down to the ceremony room during this time & get a few shots of the room all ready to go:

I then met up with the groom & his groomsmen:

I don’t tend to stage many pictures, but if someone requests a specific photo I am always happy to oblige. In this instance the groom wanted a picture of he & his ushers walking through the grounds:

Then its back up to the bride’s room:

Wedding Photography at the KP in Pocklington, near York by Simon Cardwell

I shoot weddings in and around York quite regularly and I always look forward to working there. But this was my first time working at this venue & I was glad to find it had extensive grounds with plenty of backdrops for photographs.

I didn’t photograph the bridal preparations on this occasion, so I started here with the bride making her way to the main building in a golf buggy:

Photo of the Week 5 by Simon Cardwell

This week I would like to show you one of my all time favourite pictures I have taken. This one was taken at the Inn at Whitewell in Lancashire back in September 2015.

In the 12 years I have photographed weddings there haven’t been many brides that have worn a pair of wellies on the big day, making this photo all the more precious:

Wedding Photography in a rural church & barn by Simon Cardwell

This wedding took place at a rurally located church, which meant mud, rain, wet ground, early sunset (the ceremony took place at dusk), cold weather (the reception took place in a barn on an actual working farm).

Luckily I have the experience to cope with any such challenges & I thought this wedding provided me with some interesting photographs I don’t often get the chance to get.

This was the second time I had shot for this family (I photographed the bride’s brothers wedding in 2014) & at this venue (his wedding took place at the same family owned farm).

Here is a selection from the day:

This land rover gave a nice juxtaposition with the church behind:

Wedding Photography at the Radisson Blu in Durham by Simon Cardwell

This is a photograph from my archive taken on Portobello Road in Notting Hill, West London.

If the wedding is taking place in or close to Central London, I always suggest we venture onto the streets & interact with the city & the people on the streets. It invariably leads to some unique pictures.

The reaction of a passer by can be priceless:

Wedding Photography in Whitby by Simon Cardwell

Whitby is not a place I often photograph in, but I jumped at the chance to travel there for a wedding when given the chance.

The home of Dracula, Whitby is somewhere I visited a child many times & I found many of those memories came flooding back throughout the day.

As usual I started during the bridal preparations, which on this occasion took place in a nearby hotel:

New Year's Eve wedding from the Bridge Hotel in Wetherby, near Leeds by Simon Cardwell

Today I would like to share some photos with you from a recent wedding. On this occasion I found myself at The Bridge Hotel in Wetherby, not far from Leeds.

I always seem to have a wedding on New Year’s Eve & in truth it is a day I like to work. Everyone is in good spirits & there is always a nice feel to proceedings.

Sometimes I find myself in a fairly small hotel room with 10+ people in there plus children. It presents certain challenges in terms of the lighting & the space to get good photos.

In this case you have to be patient & let the photos find you, if you overthink it they will get away from you.

a summer wedding at Walworth Castle near Darlington, County Durham by Simon Cardwell

This wedding took place last summer at a venue I have worked at many times. Walworth Castle is located a couple of miles outside my hometown of Darlington. I have worked here steadily over the years & I even came here on a school trip over 20 years ago.

One great aspect of the large reception room at Walworth Castle is the skylights which allow for some fantastic natural light in the room, especially in the summer months:

Sometimes in the summer when it is particularly sunny, I suggest we do the couple portraits later in the day, usually around 6pm when the sun has gone down a bit.
