a rainy day at Beamish Hall, County Durham / by Simon Cardwell

This was one of my last weddings of the 2018 season & unfortunately it rained most of the day.

I think a rainy wedding is an interesting one to look at as it can give you an idea of what to expect in the event of rain on your wedding day. I don’t think the final results are much different to on a clear or sunny day.

On this occasion the bride was getting ready at her parents house which was close to not only the church but also the reception venue, Beamish Hall.

I arrived a couple of hours before to start the coverage:

The bride coming down the stairs can produce an emotional photo:

The reactions usually make for a good picture:

Of course Dad’s first time seeing his daughter in her dress is probably an equally emotional moment:

The church was nearby & I find a rainy day usually makes for some fun photographs when getting from the wedding cars to the church door:

If the bride was getting out the car at the same time this chap was putting his umbrella away, it might have ended up as one of my all time best photos. Almost:

In inclement weather (and also when the sun is very bright), I will suggest shooting the bride & groom portraits (and sometimes the group shots too) after the wedding breakfast. Usually around 5-6pm. Of course it isn’t an option in the winter as the sun will set too early, but it allows time for the rain to stop.

On this occasion it worked a treat and we were able to get outside:
